Owner of Shoreline Mental Health & Performance, PLLC

  • The importance of being heard and understood can’t be overstated. As a therapist, I feel honored to be trusted with the personal stories each client shares. I believe that a mutual trust is the most important part of the therapeutic relationship and that it is through this bond that changes are made. As a clinician, I use an integrated, strengths-based approach to therapy, finding value in conceptualizing client’s concerns through interpersonal and schema therapy models, while also incorporating interventions from CBT, DBT, and other evidence based approaches. I am a HeartMath Certified Practitioner and often incorporate biofeedback into general therapy and performance focused sessions.

  • I am trained as a generalist and therefore work with a diverse range of client populations and presenting concerns for both therapy and psychological assessment. Through additional training and clinical experience, I have expertise related to sport and performance psychology, OCD and anxiety-related disorders, self-esteem & body image concerns. I am a former university staff psychologist and I still particularly enjoy working with teens and young adults. As a military spouse, I also love working with veterans, members of the armed forces, and their families. I currently see therapy clients 6 years and older.

  • I am a Licensed Psychologist and Health Services Provider in North Carolina. I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 2019. Prior to earning my doctorate, I received my Master’s of Arts in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee and my Bachelor’s degree (Psychology Major, Leadership Studies Minor) from the University of Kansas where I was a member of the varsity swim and dive team (ROCK CHALK!).

  • I love spending time outdoors with my husband and two dogs. In my free time, I can often be found reading at the beach or spending time at the local coffee shops. Although I’m no longer a competitive athlete, I still enjoy working out regularly and following sports of all kinds (especially my Jayhawks).

  • I strive to create a safe space where individuals can be their authentic selves and feel empowered to make meaningful change in their lives. Starting therapy can feel scary and daunting – I strive to demystify the process and create a trusting, non-judgmental environment where exploration and growth can occur. As a clinician, I use a flexible and collaborative approach with foundations in person-centered and feminist therapy. That means I believe you are the expert on your life, and, through the therapeutic relationship, I hope to assist you in identifying individual, systemic, cultural, and contextual factors that are adding to or detracting from the life you want to live. By building insight, increasing self-confidence and self-compassion, and learning new skills, I believe meaningful change can occur. I also incorporate interventions from CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based approaches.

  • I am trained as a generalist and therefore work with a diverse range of client populations and presenting concerns for both therapy and psychological assessment. Through additional training and clinical experience, I have expertise related to trauma – especially sexual and intimate partner violence—body image and eating concerns, self-compassion, and anxiety-related concerns. I have trained and worked at several different college counseling centers and particularly enjoy working with young adults. I currently see therapy clients 15 years and older.

  • I am a Licensed Psychologist and Health Services provider in North Carolina. I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2021. Prior to earning my doctorate, I received my Master’s of Arts in Psychology from Western Carolina University and my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Ohio State University.

  • I am a nature lover – woods, lake, beach – all of it! My lofty goal is to reach each of the US National Parks in my lifetime. I love spending time with my husband, son, and two beagles. I also enjoy reading, traveling, and good food (especially ice cream).

Nancy McKean, PhD, HSP-P

Licensed Psychologist (NC)

  • I take a collaborative approach to therapy that prioritizes the development of a safe, affirming, and trusting therapeutic relationship. As safety and trust grow, I work to help individuals make sense of their life stories, connect with their emotional experience, unravel unhelpful patterns, nurture self-compassion, and develop meaningful paths forward. Integrating elements of psychodynamic, feminist, cognitive-behavioral, and acceptance-based approaches, I tailor my approach to each unique individual and view our work together as a partnership.

  • I am trained as a generalist and able to provide therapy services for a wide variety of presenting concerns and client populations. Areas of additional training and extensive clinical experience include family-of-origin concerns, interpersonal patterns, life transitions, LGBTQ+ issues, and sexual trauma. I currently see therapy clients 18 years and older.

  • I am a Licensed Psychologist and Health Services provider in the state of North Carolina. I completed my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at Indiana University – Bloomington in 2020 and completed my doctoral internship at UNC-Chapel Hill. I also hold a Master’s degree in Counseling & Counselor Education and an Education Specialist degree in Mental Health Counseling (both from Indiana University – Bloomington), as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Northern Iowa.

  • In my spare time, I love spending time with my daughter, hiking, going to the beach, taking care of (and multiplying) my plants, and doing yoga.

Policies & Procedures

Payment.

Payment is required at time of service and can be paid by cash, card, or check. Cards on file will be auto-billed after session is completed. Payment arrangements for certain specific tasks, such as psychological testing, consulting, or court-ordered appearances will be discussed with you and agreed upon before any charges are applied to your account.

Cancellations.

If you know you will need to miss or reschedule an appointment, please let your therapist know as soon as possible. If an appointment is cancelled with less than 24 hour notice, you will be charged a cancellation fee. Appointment cancellation can be done through the Client Portal, by phone, or email. No-show appointments are charged at the set rate for the scheduled service.

Sliding Scale.

Fees are set before or during first session, but concerns should be discussed as they arise. To assist with financial hardship, we offer a sliding fee scale for therapy services based on client’s income. Proof of income may be required to be eligible for fee reductions. Please talk with your therapy about any financial concerns impacting your ability to receive services.

Outside Contact & Confidentiality.

It is not uncommon to see clients around town from time to time (e.g., in the grocery store, at the gym, etc.). Should your therapist see you outside of our session, they will not engage you in conversation in order to protect your privacy, based on the ethical obligation to maintain your confidentiality. You are not bound by these ethics however, so if you’d prefer to say hello, you are welcome to do so.

Insurance.

We do not accept insurance, therefore are considered out-of-network for most insurance companies. At your request, we will provide a superbill which you may be able to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please contact your insurance provider for more information about specific requirements.

Emergencies.

If you are in crisis or in an emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. We do not provide 24 hour crisis-intervention services.
